As a five-year-old, Shelley Fraser is known for mischief.
On Halloween in l949, she fancies her brother's devil costume and persuades her mother to hem it up for her. But her plan to scare the total baloney out of the neighbor's babies backfires.
At kindergarten, she throws a six-year-old birthday party never to be forgotten, falls in love at juice time, and learns to read.
Six weeks into first grade, she becomes one of over 30,000 falling down the Polio Hole—which is the way she thinks of the illness sweeping across America.
During those years of dealing with braces, crutches, the loss of muscles that will never come back, she finds she is still very much who she always was, only more aware of the world's miracles. With a lasting lesson from her night visitor in the Isolation Hospital and a second chance as the Halloween Queen with her sweetheart Richard, she also earns a dog named Buddy, a horse with the nickname Lightn', and the friendship of a woman who teaches the enchantment of letters that can be read only with a mirror.
Shelley's battle to overcome the nightmare illness that changed America is woven into the story of the scientific development of the vaccine that nailed shut the Polio Hole. The efforts to bury the Hole worldwide is a major challenge of the twenty-first century.

The Polio Hole edition by Shelley Mickle Professional Technical eBooks Reviews
My son in 6th grade has the following to say about this book
"At first glance The Polio Hole seems like nothing much. But when you actually READ the book you find its a "hole" lot different than what you would expect. When young Shelley Fraser Mickle is infected by polio, she is rushed to the hospital along with thousands of kids. During her time in the hospital she has many visitors that help her gain confidence. But in order to leave with her life changing disease she needs to get prepared for the world around her. I would recommend this book to anyone, as it is in line for the next american classic. From ketchup to coffee, dolls to dogs, hospitals to horses, even department stores to devil costumes this book is one of the best! A very inspiring, enjoyable read!
Marcela Ifju,
The polio Hole is a great book, because it's a true story of all the struggles that Shelley Fraser Mickle had as a child. Or as Shelley likes to say "falling down the polio hole". Shelly is not the only one falling down the polio hole, in fact this is a virus that killed scores of people and swept across America. This book was a great read and I recommend it to everyone, especially kids ten and up. I experienced many different emotions throughout the book like sadness, happiness and sometimes tears. For me this book is a must read, because it is a mix of a factual novel and a memoir. It was interesting for me to see all the struggles they had to come up with a vaccine for polio. I really liked the way Shelly Mickle used concrete details to paint images in your head. Overall, I give this book a A+.
The Polio Hole is a great book that I would recommend for 5th graders up. The Story is about Shelley Fraser Mickle struggle with polio from the age of five. You will get caught up in this great story and not want to put the book down. I found myself crying and laughing throughout the book. As well as a great adventure story I learn't a lot about the history of polio and the invention of the vaccines. I love the way Shelley Mickle accepts people for who they are as a person and not the color of their skin. She was so descriptive with her similes I felt like she was drawing a prefect picture in my mind. After every chapter there was a Did You Know page which was fun to go over and it helped me learn even more about polio. Throughout the book there are a few pictures of Shelley Mickle as a child these were fun to look at. A great book. I highly recommend it!
My daughter Annalise read this book and she just thought it was wonderful and she wanted to write a review towards it, so here it is. The Polio Hole is a fantastic book/memoir that I recommend for children in grades fourth and up. This story really helps you understand about polio and what it is and how it effects you and your body. These days no one gets polio anymore thanks to the March of Dimes (who is now raising money to help cure premature births.)This book is about Shelley Fraser Mickle and her struggle with polio as a kid, Shelley also makes some new friends along the way! But Shelley was lucky because she didn't have such a severe case to where she might be put in danger and die. But in this time many adults and children had the poliovirus or as Shelley said they were sucked in the polio hole. Thousands of people died of this disease, but thankfully Shelley didn't. Then she wouldn't be able to share any of her amazing books with us! Shelley now lives on a farm in Alachua with her husband and two horses Precious and Caliente. Shelley also created a publishing company for children born with disabilities called the Wild Onion Press. I encourage everyone to read this wonderful memoir, The Polio Hole.

Insightful and moving, Mickle weaves the story of her own battle with polio with the story of the discovery of the vaccine. Well and warmly written, it is informative for those who are too young to remember polio and healing for survivors. Thank you, Shelley!
